The Phelps Immigrants
While there has been various claims about the Phelps ancestry in
England, as yet no positive connection to any of the American
immigrants (William, George and Richard) has been established. It has
also been determined through Y-DNA analysis that William PHELPS and
George PHELPS were not brothers and have no identifiable common
patrilineal ancestor. The Phelps
DNA Project shows that the modal Y-DNA of descendants of William
and George differ in 26 of 37 markers.

Griswold Ancestry in England
The principal information source for the Griswold ancestry is The
Greswolds Family: Twelve Generations in England, researched and
editied by Robert L. & Esther G. French and compiled by Coralee
Griswold (1999). Only an outline of the earlier Greswold generations is
presented here. Those interested in source citations, lineage analysis
and further details are encouraged to supported further research by
purchasing a copy of the booklet from the publisher, The Griswold Family Association.
Refer also to the series of short articles in The American
Genealogist (Vols. 39-41), by Kiepura, Jacobus, and Hunt, on the
GRISWOLD ancestry. Each of these articles builds on and corrects the
preceding, so they should be consulted as a unit.

Edward and Margaret Griswold
Edward GRISWOLD - bap. Jul. 26, 1607, Wooten Wawen,
Warwickshire; d. Aug. 30, 1691, Killingworth (now Clinton) Middlesex
Co., CT; bur. Indian River Cem., Killingworth, CT. A memorial [photo] to Edward and Margaret
GRISWOLD was erected at Killingworth in 1990 by the Griswold Family in
America. Son of George GRISWOLD and Dousabel.
An attorney, Edward was delegate to the General Court, Justice of the
Peace, and Deacon of the church. Married first by 1629 at Kenilworth,
Warwickshire. Edward married second in 1672 the widow Sarah (DIAMOND)
BEMIS (b. about 1632, Kenilworth, Warwickshire, England), daughter of
John and Rebecca DIAMOND, and widow of James BEMIS (b. abt 1626 Dedham,
Essex, England; d. Jul. 1665, New London Co., CT). Daughters of Sarah
and James BEMIS: Rebecca married first Tobias MINTER, second John
DYMOND, and third Bebedict SATTERLEE; and Mary married her step-brother

Margaret - d. Aug. 23, 1670, Killingworth (now Clinton),
Middlesex Co., CT. Her gravestone in the Congregational Church Cemetery
is engraved 'M. G. 1670'. Surname not known.
Genevieve Tylee Kiepura writes in "Griswold Ancestry in England"
(The American Genealogist 39:176-180) that "Edward
GRISWOLD m. Margaret BLENCOW of Marston St. Lawrence, co. Northampton,
dau of John BLENCOW and his wife Mary WALLISON." However,
in "Note on the Ancestry of the Griswolds of Connecticut"
(The American Genealogist 40:43-44), John G. Hunt conclusively
shows that the Edward GRISWOLD who married Margaret BLENCOW is
not the immigrant to CT, and Genevieve Tylee Kiepura concurs.
The Griswold Family Association identifies the husband of Margaret
BLENCOW as Edward GRESWOLD (1594-1633) son of Thomas GRESWOLD
and Elizabeth SHUCKBURGH - this Edward being father of the American
immigrant Michael GRISWOLD of Wethersfield, CT.
