Still living, 1909. She sends me the following verses, written by herself, in Ludlow, Vt., on her eightieth birthday, Feb. 25, 1900: Written by Mrs. S. L. Johnson, Ludlow, Vt., widow of Silas Johnson(3), on her eightieth birthday, Feb. 25, 1900.
I am eighty years old to-day.
And all those years have passed away,
And now I take my life review
Those many changes I've passed through,
The days have passed-the years have fled
And friends are numbered with the dead.
Has my life here been what it should?
Have I done all the good I could?
And have I strove some soul to win
To Christ and from the paths of sin?
I know I have him oft forgot,
But His loving kindness changeth not.
And in His promises I rest.
I know that He my soul has blest.
And in His love I am secure,
For all His promises are sure.
He'll guide me with his powerful hand,
And bring me to the promised land.
For us His precious blood was spilt.
He bore our sin and took our guilt,
And now in Heaven he intercedes
And with the Father ever pleads.
And must He plead and plead in vain,
The Lamb that was for sinners slain?
If I am spared another year,
I hope to feel his presence near,
And trust in His almighty power
To keep me in temptation's hour;
To keep me in my latest breath,
When I pass through the vale of death.
And then I hope dear friends to meet,
And all the loved ones there to greet.
Upon that happy, happy shore,
Where loved ones meet to part no more.
When God has wiped all tears away,
We'll reign with Him in endless day.
Christ in His word to us revealed,
And in his blood the compact sealed;
He'll guide us safely all the way,
If we will hear Him and obey,
Until we reach our home above,
As He has promised-God is Love.
But if we do His call refuse,
And all His precepts we abuse,
He'll leave us in our sin and woe,
There is no sin in Heaven, we know,
He'll leave us in our sad estate,
When that sad cry will he, "Too late."
