494. Rev. Javan Knapp Mason D.D. (Walter5, Moses4, Daniel3, John2, Hugh1). Born West Bethel, Maine, on 10 Sep 1817. Died Herndon, Va., on 18 Aug 1900. Data from Mason.

Javan K. Mason prepared for college at Gould's Academy and graduated from Bowdoin College, A.B. 1845, Bangor Theological Seminary, 1848 D.D., and 1875 A.M. He was pastor of the Congregational Church at Fryeburg, Maine, 1877 to 1886, and long pastor of the church at Hampden, Maine, and later at Thomaston, Maine, where he served as chaplain of the State Prison. While in that capacity he became much interested in the movement for ameliorating the condition of convicts and for devising means for their mental and moral improvement. In 1872 he was a delegate from Maine to the World's Convention in London, England, which had these special objects in charge. At the Bethel, Maine, centennial celebration in 1874 he responded to the toast of "Our Pioneer Fathers." He was a man of great ability and a faithful worker in his Master's Vineyard. From Maine he moved to Virginia.

From 1876 to 1900 she taught in high schools or academies in Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and New York; 1900 to 1902, clerk in the Census Bureau, Washington, D. C.; 1903 to 1908, clerk in Pension Agency, Boston, Mass.; 1908 to 1914, clerk in Pension Bureau, Washington; 1914 to 1931, clerk in Federal Children's Bureau, also Washington, and is now retired. She is a lover of music and a contributor to the Washington Symphony Orchestra.

Seminary, Monticello Seminary, Godfrey, Ill., and now (March 1933) is in Brenau College, Gainesville, Ga.
