Philip C. Mason was a shoemaker, blacksmith and mason, at the same time engaged in farming. He was possessed of more than ordinary ability; in politics, a Democrat; in religion, a member of the Baptist Church.

The following record was copied from the family Bible of Pamelia (Mason) Sanborn, by Mrs. F. W. Smith of Dixfield, Maine, her granddaughter: "Mary Crowell was the daughter of Jonathan and Remember (Tilton) Crowell. Jonathan was a sailor and landed at Martha's Vineyard where he married Remember Tilton about 1790. They came to New Sharon, Maine, about this time. Their nine children were all born in New Sharon. Jonathan died February 1832. Remember Tilton Crowell died 1851."
