843. Sarah Jane Mason (Lawrence Sprague6, William5, William4, Daniel3, John2, Hugh1). Born Potsdam, N. Y., on 6 Aug 1832. Died Washington, D. C., on 19 Jan 1918. Data from Mason.

SML Comment: Picture from Morgan Benson. SARAH JANE MASON. Her first husband, Lt. Col. Harry Brownson, was appointed from Vermont. He worked as a Quartermaster officer during the Civil War, and stayed in for several years following the war. After his resignation in 1868, he worked as an Agent for the Union Pacific Railroad in Omaha, Nebraska, and later as Station Master for the Wells Fargo Company in Omaha. He died on 7 February 1891 in Omaha, Nebraska, and is buried there. After her first husband's death, Sarah Jane Mason married Colonel Clement A. Lounsberry, a newspaper man living in Bismarck, Dakota Territory. Colonel Lounsberry, a cavalry officer in the Union army during the Civil War, was the first newspaper man to report on the death of Lt. Col. George A. Custer and the massacre of the 7th Cavalry at the Little Big Horn in 1876. He wired details of the battle to the New York newspapers and to the Army Headquarters in Washington DC. They are buried at Arlington National Cemetery, outside Washington, DC, where they had spent their final years.

She first married Harry Brownson Jr., son of Harry Brownson & Eliza Coleman, on 6 Apr 1851. Born Richmond, Vt., on 10 Mar 1829. Died Omaha, Neb., on 7 Sep 1891. Data from Mason.

Mr. Brownson served in the Civil War, appointed in Varmont, Capt. A. Q. M., February 29, 1864, mustered out October 30, 1865.

Col. Lounsbury wrote a history of North Dakota and was at Bismarck, N. D., when the Custer Massacre occurred.

844. Andrew Jackson Mason (Lawrence Sprague6, William5, William4, Daniel3, John2, Hugh1). Born Potsdam, N. Y., on 24 Oct 1834. Died New Haven, Vt., on 26 Jan 1898. Residence: New Haven, Vt. Data from Mason.

Mr. Mason attended school at Potsdam, when seventeen he went to New Haven and took up farming until the outbreak of the Civil War. September 5, 1861, he enlisted as a private in Co. F, 5th Vermont Regt., and for bravery on the battlefield was promoted to 1st Lieut. and was in that capacity at the time of his discharge, March 31, 1863. After his return to New Haven he purchased a farm which he successfully conducted until his death. He was a member of Ethan Allen Post, G. A. R., of Vergennes, also charter member of Libanus Lodge, No. 47, A. F. and A. R. of Bristol. In politics a Republican, in religion a Congregationalist and member of the church.

He married Annie Delia Ward, daughter of Chester Ward & Abigail Hawkins, on 22 Sep 1859 in Burlington, Vt. Born Waltham, Addison Co., Vt., on 17 Apr 1839. Died New Haven, Vt., on 23 Dec 1917. Data from Mason.

845. Charles W. Mason (Lawrence Sprague6, William5, William4, Daniel3, John2, Hugh1). Born Potsdam, N. Y., on 6 Nov 1837. Died on 28 May 1898. Residence: New Haven, Vt., and Los Angeles, Calif. Data from Mason.

Mr. Mason was a breeder and dealer in thoroughbred sheep which have been exported to nearly all the United States, and he has shipped to Africa, being one of the first to establish this enterprise, also a breeder of high-blooded horses. He served in the Civil War, enlisting in Co. G, 14th Vermont Volunteers, when they organized September 9, 1862, mustered in October 1862, 2nd Lieut. Returned to Vermont July 1863. He raised Co. E for the 3rd Vt. Militia Regt., and was commissioned Captain by ex-Gov. Gregory J. Smith. He was in the Battle of Gettysburg and has an excellent war record. Member of the Congregational Church, in politics Republican.

He married Cornelia Ruth Rogers, daughter of Jabez W. Rogers & Helen Ward, on 13 Oct 1864. Born Ferrisburgh, Vt., on 16 Mar 1842. Died Los Angeles, Calif., on 5 Apr 1896. Data from Mason.
