Mr. Mason was very public spirited and held many positions of trust, town clerk 1858, 1859, 1860, 1865, 1866, town treasurer 1857-1861, in the militia 1861, justice of the peace, member of Bethel Lodge, No. 97, and on its first board of officers elected under the charter, also an officer 1864-1865, treasurer 1874, 1875, secretary July 1887, in 1890 his name was on the list of members in good standing, member of the Universalist Church which was organized in 1847, and trustee of Gould's Academy. He was a merchant on the Hill for many years.

He married Melissa Marshall Russell, daughter of Ezra Twitchell Russell & Phebe Kimball, on 13 Oct 1853 in Bethel, Maine. Born Bethel, Maine, on 24 Sep 1832. Died Bethel, Maine, on 2 Apr 1907. Data from Mason.

At the opening of the Civil War, when the call for 300,000 men was ordered, Clark S. Edwards took out papers and was chosen captain of the first company organized under this call. This company became Co. I, 5th Maine Regt. He was discharged with rank of Brig-Gen. for conspicuous bravery, July 27, 1865. Residence, Bethel, Maine.

Mr. Mason was long in trade at Berlin Falls, N. H., and subsequently at Bethel Hill, Maine, also interested in timber lands, lumbering and town affairs. He was selectman 1861-1862, town clerk 1864, justice of the peace and town treasurer many years, member of the militia 1861, member of Bethel Lodge, No. 97, and on its first board of officers elected under the charter, also an officer 1862, 1863, 1864, 1865, and in 1890 his name was on the list of members in good standing. An alumnus of Gould's Academy and one of the founders of The Bethel Savings Bank in which he held the offices of treasurer and president successively. He was greatly interested in the Universalist Church and left it a legacy of $1,000. He is said to have been the first to use mineral coal in Bethel, which was in 1873, and in August 1874 he took a prominent part in the centennial celebration of Bethel.

He first married Alma Frances Connor, daughter of Gilman Connor & W., on 29 May 1856. Born Maine on 23 Aug 1836. Died on 29 Jun 1864. Data from Mason.

Mr. Mason was a farmer, also a dealer in cattle and sheep and interested in timber lands and lumbering. He was a member of Bethel Lodge, No. 97, being the first Mason in Bethel, an acting officer and also on a committee to open a lodge at Bethel Hill, which was done June 14, 1860. In 1863 he held office in it, and in 1890 his name was on the list of members in good standing. In 1861 he was in the militia.

He married Hepsibah Eames Kimball, daughter of Israel Kimball & Sarah Webber, on 3 Nov 1865. Born Bethel, Maine, on 27 Jul 1834. Died Bethel, Maine, on 5 Feb 1925. Data from Mason.
