187. Sarah Lavina PHELPS (George Morey7, Lydia MOREY6, Linsford5, John4, George3, George2, George1). Born on 12 Jan 1824 in Lyme, NH. Died on 22 Apr 1909 in Portland, Multnomah Co., OR.

She married William Penn ABRAMS, on 11 Oct 1842 in Franklin, NH. Born on 15 Aug 1820 in Sanbornton, NH. Died on 26 Nov 1876 in Portland, Multnomah Co., OR. Occupation: Millwright.

William Penn Abrams, born 15 Aug 1820 in Sanbornton, NH, moved to Gainesville, Alabama, to build and operate a sawmill. For health reasons he traveled by ship and crossed the Isthmus of Panama to California in 1849. While bear hunting in the Merced River area he discovered Yosemite Valley. In November 1849 he took a boat to Portland, OR, where he built the first sawmill in Portland. Returned to Gainesville to get his family and New York where he got parts to built a steam sawmill. He also bought books for the Portland Public Library. On 22 April 1851 he arrived with his family in Portland, OR. He built a mill on the Willamette R. in Portland, and later built a mill in Corvallis and at The Dalles, OR. He died on 26 Nov 1876 several months after a fall at his Portland mill. There is a plaque marking the site of the mill near the end of Mill St.
