Jean Salva came in Nouvelle-France around 1755, as a soldier of the regiment of La Sarre to fight in the French and Indian war (Guerre de 7 ans) (source: gov.of Canada). When the war ended, he stayed and married Louise Pélissier in 1761 in St-Michel d'Yamaska,Québec, which is a beautiful little village at the confluence of the Yamaska river and the St-Lawrence River, a few miles east of the city of Sorel. The "s" at the end of the name appears with Joseph Salvas, the son of Jean and Louise.
Jean Salva (dit Laviolette) came from a village name St-Rémy, in the Diocèse of Langres, Province of Champagne. This village do not exist anymore by this name; it could now be the municipality of Brennes. His parents were Jean Salva and Marie Bruyère. Louise Pélissier is the widow of Jean Thibert and already had a daugther named Catherine. Her parents were Isaac-Pierre Pélissier and Marie-Louise Harel.
In France, the patronym "Salva" is not common and is almost exclusively encountered in the south (Languedoc-Roussillon or French Catalogna), particurlaly in the cities of Perpignan, Carcassonne, Toulouse and Marseille, and also in Spain. The patronym "Salvat" is also frequently encountered. "Salva" is a latin word and means "saved".
