Browne Ancestry in England
The Browne-Cramphorne ancestry in England is based on the
material presented in The Ancestry of Eva Belle Kempton 1878-1908:
Part I The Ancestry of Warren Francis Kempton 1817-1879,
by Dean Crawford Smith and edited by Melinde Lutz Sanborn (Boston,
1996), pages 168-196. This work contains much additional supporting
material, and additional details on many family members.
William and Joan Browne
William BROWNE - b. about 1505; bur. Jan. 25, 1565/6,
Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire. His will, dated Jan. 5, 1565/66,
names all of his known children, and his wife 'Johan.' Married

Hertfordshire. In her will dated Mar. 31, 1572/3 and proved May
5, 1573, she calls herself 'Johan Browne late the wife of Willm
Browne decessed,' and names as sons Edmund, John and Laurence,
and as daughters Margaret, Annis and Alice. She does not name
James, William, Thomas and Nicholas.

Hertfordshire. Daughter of William CRAMPHORNE
and Jone PLOWE.
- Elizabeth - bap. Feb. 14, 1584/5, Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire.
Possible daughter.
- Richard - bap. Feb. 2, 1585/6, Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire.
Possible son and twin of George. Not the Richard BROWNE of Watertown,
MA. He may be the Richard BROWNE who married first Sep. 8, 1616,
Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire, Jane FILPOT, and second Dec. 19,
1625, Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire, Sarah ARCHER. Children of
Richard and Jane: Rafe; and a son. Child of Richard and Sarah:
Mary.
- George - bap. Feb. 2, 1585/6, Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire.
Possible son and twin of Richard. He may be the George BROWNE
who married Feb. 22, 1620/1, Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire, Margaret
FOOTE. Children of George and Margaret: Joan; and Adam.
- Abraham - bap. Oct. 22, 1588, Sawbridgeworth,
Hertfordshire, England; d. 1645/8, Watertown, MA.

Probably died young.
- Sarah - bap. Sep. 21, 1591, Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire.
- John - bap. Jan. 11, 1596/7, Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire.
Probably died as infant.
- John - bap. Apr. 23, 1598, Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire;
bur. Jun. 20, 1636, Watertown, MA. Arrived in New England on
the Lyon in 1632 and settled at Watertown, MA, where he was admitted
a freeman on Sep. 3, 1634. John received five lands grants, totalling
about 55 acres. Married by 1634 Dorothy, who probably married
second William POTTER of Watertown, and later of Stamford, CT.
Children: Hannah married John MEAD; and Mary.
- Edmund - bap. May 4, 1600, Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire;
d. about 1665, 'in the Countrey of Serrenam' (Suriname). Edmund
was admitted to the Church at Boston on Jun. 22, 1635, and was
granted land there on Jan. 8, 1637/8. Various documents indicate
that Edmund as a co-owner of the ketch Hope, of which
he was Master when it sailed in Feb. 1663. In Jul. 1630, the
ship was at Nevis and bound for Jamaica, and the last record
is that the ship was at the Cayman Islands in Jul. 1664. Land
listed in the inventory of Edmund's estate was sold on Jan. 1,
1672 by his nephew and "next heir" Johnathan BROWNE
of Watertown, MA. Married Feb. 14, 1653/4, Boston, Suffolk Co.,
MA to Elizabeth OAKLEY (b. about 1630; died 1670/2), probably
a widow when she married Edmund. "Mary the relict of the
late Robert Bouchier, alias Garret, grandmother" of Edmunds
children was probably the mother of Elizabeth. Children: Mary
probably died young; and John probably died young.
- Mary - bap. May 9, 1602, Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire.
- Hannah - bap. Jan. 13, 1604/5, Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire.
She has been identified as Anna, who married by 1638 Matthew
INES (b. about 1613; d. about Apr. 1661), who called Edmund BROWNE
his brother-in-law. However, based on Hannah's age at marriage
(34) and at the birth of Matthew Ines' youngest child (50), it
may be that the wife of Matthew INES was a sister of Edmund BROWNE's
wife, and therefore Anna OAKLEY. Matthew was an innkeeper, and
was admitted to the Boston church on Apr. 20, 1634. Matthew's
estate was inventoried Apr. 16, 1661, and included land at Muddy
River and at Long Island. Children: John married Elizabeth; Elizabeth
married Richard RANDALL; Thomas had marriage to Mary ARNOLD published;
