FREEMAN
From the files of Stephen M. Lawson
Thomas and Mary Freeman
Much of the material used to construct the family of Thomas
FREEMAN is based on extensive research by cousins Miles Philbeck and
Monte Hart.
Thomas FREEMAN - b. about 1717, Surry Co., VA; d. after 1763, Brunswick Co., VA. Son of John FREEMAN, Jr. and Mary.
Resided in Albemarle Parish, Surry Co., VA. The records of Albemarle
Parish, Surry Co., VA include the baptism of Peter FREEMAN on May 4,
1740, son of Thomas and Mary, and the baptism of Jesse FREEMAN on Jul.
16, 1749, the son of Thomas and Susannah. In a letter dated Aug. 9,
1937 from Anna Maye (FREEMAN) REID, daughter of George Romulus FREEMAN,
great granddaughter of John and Barbara (PAINTER) FREEMAN, writes, "The
Freeman family came over from Virginia to N.C. with the leading
families of our co. I happened to run upon a family while I was
teaching in the mts of NC, who had a wagon wheel off of the wagon that
our great grandfather came in together with his grandfather he was real old then."
There is no other known evidence that Thomas FREEMAN moved to
Rutherford Co., NC. Thomas married first about 1738, and second by 1748
Susannah, whose surname may have been SANFORD or SANDEFOUR.
Mary - One undocumented source gives PRINCE as the surname
for Mary.
Son of Thomas and Mary Freeman
- Peter - b. Oct. 3, 1739, Albemarle
Parish, Surry Co., VA; d. before 1787, and perhaps before 1782.
Children of Thomas and Susannah Freeman
- Jesse - b. May 24, 1749, Albemarle Parish, Surry Co., VA; bap.
there Jul. 16, 1749; d. after 1816, possibly in Buncombe Co., NC. Jesse
was in Brunswick Co., VA through 1788, and appears in the 1790 census
of Ruherford Co., NC. In 1807 Jesse sold land to Malone FREEMAN and
Robertson FREEMAN. When Malone FREEMAN sold his land in 1816 it was
described as being granted to Jesse FREEMAN, whose will (not located)
left it to Malone. Jesse may, or may not, have been the Jesse FREEMAN
who married Elizabeth Catherine. It has been suggested that Elizabeth
Catharine may have been living with son Malone in 1800. Children of
Jesse FREEMAN: Elizabeth married John PRINCE; Spencer Malone married;
and Nathaniel Robertson married Catherine SEWARD.
- Jean - Possible daughter of Thomas and named as sister of Peter in Alfred Bird FREEMAN, His Book.
Married William LIFESEY. William named daughter Phoebe in his will, and
Jean named her in a deed of gift. Daughter: Phoebe m. Mr. SMITH
(together with her Uncle Peter, Phoebe SMITH sold 100 acres of land in
Apr. 1774 to John DUGGER, Sr.).
Peter and Faithy Freeman
Peter FREEMAN - b. Oct. 3, 1739, Albemarle Parish, Surry Co., VA; bap. there May 4, 1740; d. abtout 1783, probably in VA. Son
of Thomas and Mary FREEMAN.
Peter served in the Brunswick Co., VA militia in Sep. 1758, with his
uncle Edward FREEMAN. Peter FREEMAN appears on the 1782 real property
tax list of Brunswick Co., VA, but is not on the 1783 personal property
tax list, which includes Fathey FREEMAN (widow), Benjamin FREEMAN
(son), Edward FREEMAN (uncle) and Jesse FREEMAN (uncle). Married about
1760, Brunswick Co., VA.
Faithy - b. about 1740, VA; d. after 1810, Rutherford Co.,
NC. Faithy is named as wife of Peter in a Brunswick Co., VA deed of
Apr. 25, 1774. She appears as the head of a household in the 1800
census of Rutherford Co., NC: 01100-02010 (her age should be 45 &
up, rather than 26-45. She is listed "Fathersman FREEMAN" in the 1810
census of Rutherford Co., NC, age 45 & up, with one other female in
the household at age 16-26. Faithy may be the older woman in the 1820
census for John FREEMAN of Rutherford Co., NC. She appears on the
member list of Concord Baptist Church, Rutherford Co., NC.
Children of Peter and Faithy Freeman
- Benjamin - b. about 1762, Brunswick Co., VA; d. Sep. 28,
1852, Rutherford Co., NC. On Sep. 10, 1788 (Deed Book 14, page 475),
'Benjamin Freeman, late of Brunswick Co." sold to Edward BRODAUX for 60
pounds, 150 acres on the north side of the Meherin River adjoining
ROBINSON's land. This parcel was part of his father's land. In 1790,
Benjamin is in the Rutherford Co., NC census with 3 males over sixteen,
3 males to age sixteen, and 3 females. Benjamin, a shoemaker by trade,
was married about 1783 to Catharine (d. Aug. 1849, Rutherford Co., NC),
whose surname was possibly BYNUM. The birth dates of Benjamin's five
younger children are found in his personal papers, which also includes
a letter dated Apr. 24, 1831 from William FREEMAN of White Co., TN
identifying Benjaim's three older sons, and William's son Alfred
FREEMAN. Children of Benjamin and Catherine FREEMAN: William married
Elizabeth CAMPBELL; Joel T. married Mary 'Polly' HANEY; James married
first Lucy VANHOOSE, and second Elizabeth HILL; Elizabeth did not
marry; Rebecca Harris married first Dugger BURNETT, and second George
PAINTER (as his second wife); Benjamin married Nancy POPE; Sarah
'Sally' did not marry; and Peter married Artimincy DYCUS, and perhaps
married second the widow Louisa LASETER.
- Dugger - b. about 1765, Brunswick Co., VA; d. before Sep. 1824
McCaslins Branch, Rutherford Co., NC. Also known as Douglas, and
indexed in the 1790 Census as Dug FAUMAN. He married Sep. 18, 1789
(bond), Rutherford Co., NC Sarah 'Sally' PRINCE (b. abt 1770, VA; d.
1842 McCaslins Branch, Rutherford Co., NC). Census records of

Rutherford Co., NC, with bondsman Dugger FREEMAN, to Sarah FREEMAN,
whose parents are not known. Jesse married second Sep. 25, 1815 in
Brunswick Co., VA to Eliza HARRISON. Children of Allen and Temperance
FREEMAN: three daughters; a son; Allen married Elizabeth 'Betsy'
HEDGECOCK; a daughter; John L.; a daughter. One daughter was probably
Rhody, who married Jacob PADGETT, Jr. on Oct. 7, 1836 in Rutherford
Co., NC.
- Mary - b. about 1772, VA; d. after 1850, Benton Co., AL. Married
Jun. 30, 1791, Greensville Co., VA, Sterling (or Sterline) PRICE (b.
about 1770, VA). The marriage record from Geensville County Virginia Marriages, 1781-1853
reads : "FREEMAN, Mary & Sterling PRICE 30 June 1791, daughter of
Faithy FREEMAN, who gives consent. B-William Eaves, Witness, Buckner
Eaves, Minister, William Andrews (Methodist)." Some of the information
in this quote may be editoral additions, since the actual marriage
record is in columnar format with the follow entries. "Date of Bond: 31
June 1791. Name of husband: Sterling Price. Name of Bride: Mary
Freeman. Parents or Guardian of Wife: Faithy Freeman, mother. Security
and Witnesses: Wiles; Buckner Eaves." Mary and Sterling were in

when son Goolsby was born, and probably moved to AL prior to Feb. 1,
1823, when son Sterling was married in Bibb Co., AL. Children Mary and
Sterling PRICE - birth order is uncertain: Sterling Ruffin married
Alista AUTRIE; George Washington married; Benjamin Franklin; Goolsby
married Melissa LANTHRIP; James married; and Sarah.
- Peter - b. about 1774, VA; d. 1856, Rutherford Co., NC. Farmer.
Peter was in Brunswick Co., VA in 1795 and in Rutherford Co., NC by
1799. He may have been living in 1800 in the household of Faithy
FREEMAN. Peter married first Feb. 25, 1794, Greenville Co., NC Sarah

Witness W. B. FREEMAN to Peter's 1856 will is probably Wilkerson Bell,

relation, and probable brother John died before the will date. Children
of Peter and Sarah FREEMAN: Ridley married James GUFFEY; Clarissa
married Mr. MOREHEAD; Margaret married Mr. HACMER/HACKER; and Mary
'Polly' married John LUQUIRE. Children of Peter and Elizabeth FREEMAN:
