Parmenter Ancestry in England
The Parmenter ancestry in England is primarily from "Further
Notes on the English Background of John Parmeter of Sudbury and
Roxbury, Massachusetts," by Ralph Parmenter Bennett, in
NEHGR 147:377-82 (Oct. 1993).
George PARMENTER - b. about 1520; bur. Feb. 7, 1591/2,
Little Yeldham, Essex. He made his will May 8, 1591, naming his
daughter Katherine ALLISON, granddaughter Elizabeth PARMENTER,
sons Edward and William, and others.
Alice - bur. Aug. 23, 1592, Castle Hedingham, Essex.
- Robert - b. about 1545; d. after 1613.
- Christian - Married by 1591 Robert PAGE, and had children.
- Katherine - Married Mr. ALLISON, and had children.
- Richard - Married and had daughter Elizabeth (bap. Nov. 16,
1572, Little Yeldham, Essex).
- George - b. about 1552; bur Jun. 27, 1613, Little Yeldham,
Essex. His will, dated Nov. 12, 1612, and proved Jul. 8, 1613,
names brothers Robert, Richard, Edward and William, and sister
Christian, among others. Married first Amy (bur. Oct 12, 1594,
Little Yeldham, Essex), and second Elizabeth (MOTT) PURCAS (bur.
Jun. 24, 1629), daughter of John MOTT, and widow of William PUYRCAS.

- Joane - b. about 1558; bur. Oct 6, 1625, Little Yeldham,
Essex. Married Thomas STAMAR (bur. Nov. 29, 1628, Little Yeldham,
Essex). Children: Elizabeth; Susan; Thomas married Joane SAMFORD;
Henry; Samuel; Adue; and Richard.
- Edward - b. about 1561; d. after 1612. Inherited land from
his father and from his brother George. Married.
- William - bap. Jan. 7, 1562/3, Ovington, Essex; bur.
Dec. 4, 1617, Little Yeldham, Essex.
- Elizabeth - bap. Jul. 27, 1564/5, Ovington, Essex; d. by
1591.
William PARMENTER - bap. Jan. 7, 1563, Ovington, Essex;
bur. Dec. 4, 1617, Little Yeldham, Essex. William inherited land
at Tankerton and Busheleyes from his father, George PARMENTER,
and at Cowell alias Gouldwell from his brother. William wrote
his will Oct. 12, 1613 at Over Yeldman, naming his son John, and
John's minor children Mary and John. Married Jan. 21, 1583, Ovington,
Essex.
Margery GARROLD - bap. Sep 18, 1560, Ovington, Essex.
Oldest of the 8 children of George GARROLD alias BUTCHER.
- Robert - bap. Oct. 23, 1586, Little Yeldham, Essex. Inherited
land at Tankerton.
- John - b. about 1588, probably
at Little Yeldham, Essex, England; d. June 1, 1671, Roxbury,
MA.
- Ursula - Living in 1613, and named in father's will.
- George - Married Mar. 12, 1617 at Little Yeldham, Essex to
Marie USHER alias CLARKE.
- Sara - b. about 1592. Married Oct. 4, 1616, Bures St. Mary,
Suffolk to John CRESSALL/CHRISALL (will dated Jul 9, 1625 and
proved Jul. 28, 1625).
- Margaret - bap. Feb. 25, 1594/5, Little Yeldham, Essex. Married
Sep. 20, 1614, Little Yeldham, Essex to Richard POOLE.
John and Bridget Parmenter
John - b. about 1588, probably at Little Yeldham, Essex,
England; d. June 1, 1671, Roxbury, MA. Son of William
PARMENTER and Margery. John, a tailor by trade, arrived with
his family in New England from Great Yarmouth in 1639. He became
freeman May 13, 1640 and served as a deacon and selectman of Sudbury,
MA. By 1654, John PARMENTER was authorized by the town of Sudbury
"to keep a house of common entertainment and that the court
shall be moved on his behalf to grant a license to him" (Colonial
Tavernrkeepers, Vol. 5, edited by Harriet Stryker-Rodda, 1982,
page 19). His will, dated Mar. 25, 1671 and proved Jul. 25, 1671,
names his second wife, son-in-law John WOOD, grandson John PARMENTER,
and cousins CHEEVERS and John STIBBINS. John married second Aug.
9, 1660 at Roxbury, MA, Annis BAYFORD (d. Mar. 15, 1682/3, Roxbury,
MA; bur. there Mar. 17, 1682/3), widow of William CHANDLER and
John DANE. John and Bridget were married about 1609, probably
at Bures St. Mary, Suffolk, England.
Bridget - b. probably at Bures St. Mary, Suffolk, England;
d. Aug. 6, 1660, Sudbury, MA. She was probably the sister of Elizabeth,
wife of Henry LOKER. Bridget and Elizabeth may have been daughters
of William PERRY or of John SIMPSON, who both had daughters with
their names baptized at Bures St. Mary between 1585 and 1593.

John LEAVENS - b. about 1582, England; d. Nov. 15, 1647,
Roxbury, MA. Sailed from London in early Mar. 1631/2 in the 'William
& Francis', arriving in America Jun. 9, 1632; freeman at Roxbury
on Mar. 4, 1633/4. Married first on Jun. 16, 1603 at St. Mary's,
Bocking, Essex to Elizabeth STEBBIN (bur. Oct. 10, 1638, Roxbury,
Suffolk Co., MA). John's first marriage data and Elizabeth's surname
is from a LEAVENS descendant and unconfirmed. John and Elizabeth
had no known children. He was married second on Jul. 5, 1639 at
Roxbury, Suffolk Co., MA.

on Mar. 16, 1669/70 at Cambridge, Middlesex Co., MA to Samuel
BUCK.
John and Mary (Parmenter) Woods
John WOODS - b. Feb. 6, 1609/10, England; d. Jul 10,
1678, Marlborough, MA. Son of James WOODS. John WOODS, a pin-maker
by trade, arrived in America at age 26 in 1635 aboard the 'Hopewell,'
and first settled at Salem, MA, but removed to Sudbury, MA by
1638, becoming a proprietor there in 1639. He was admitted freeman
on May 10, 1642, and received several Sudbury land grants through
1655. After Marlborough was formed in 1660, John sold his property
at Sudbury and relocated to Marlborough, where he had been granted
land and served in various town offices. On Apr. 4, 1664, he deposed
that he was about age 54. His will, dated Nov. 26, 1677 and proved
Oct. 1, 1678, names his wife Mary, his three sons, daughter Katherine,
son-in-law John BELLOWS, and grandchild Hannah LEVINS. The inventory
of his estate, on Jul. 19, 1678 at £303.03.07, mentions
son-in-law Joseph NEWTON. Married about 1633.
Mary PARMENTER - b. about 1610, probably at Bures St.
Mary, Suffolk, England; d. Aug. 17, 1690, Marlborough, MA. Daughter
of John PARMENTER and Bridget. Note:
There are various unresolved date differences in alternative publications
for events recorded for the following children.

and Marlborough, MA. Married May 9, 1655 John BELLOWS (1623-1683)
of Concord. After their marriage Mary and John BELLOWS lived
at Marlborough, and had the following children: Mary; Samuel;
Abigail; Daniel; and Benjamin married.

Sep. 24, 1723), daughter of Edward RICE and Anna BENT. Children
of John and Lydia: John married first Martha BIGELOW, and second
Patience BENT; Lydia married Abraham EAGER; Hannah married Thomas
WITHERBEE; Joseph; Sarah married Simon GATES; Silence; Col. Benjamin
married Elizabeth MORSE; and James married Dorothy BARNES.
- Frances - b. Oct. 3, 1645, Sudbury, MA; d. May 14, 1718,
Marlborough, MA. Married Jun. 7, 1671 Isaac HOWE (b. Aug. 8,
1648; d. Dec. 9, 1724), son of John and Mary. Children: Elizabeth;
Sarah; Mary possibly married James RUSSELL, then married Jonathan
WILDER, then married David CHURCH; John died as infant; John
married Deliverance RICE; Bethia; Hannah; and Thankful.
- James - b. Jul. 18, 1647, Sudbury, MA; d. Aug. 7, 1718, Sudbury,
MA. Married Apr. 22, 1678 Hopestill WARD (b. Jan. 24, 1647; d.
Dec. 23, 1718), daughter of William and Elizabeth. Children,
who all died young: Bethiah; James; James; Mary; and Bethiah.
- Catharine - b. 1651, Sudbury, MA; d. Jan. 26, 1617, Sudbury,
MA. Married Joseph NEWTON (d. Sep. 24, 1727).
- Isaac - b. Jul. 14, 1655, Sudbury, MA; d. Jul. 18, 1720,
Marlborough, MA. His will, dated Jun. 8, 1720 and proved Aug.
17, 1720, names his wife, sons Isaac, Joseph, Sharles and Solomon,
and daughters Elizabeth and Dinah. The estate was inventoried
Aug. 2, 1720 at £515.18.06, about 2/3 being in real property.
Married first Mary MAYNARD (d. Feb. 3, 1689, Marlborough, MA),
daughter of John MAYNARD and Mary GATES, and second on May 8,
1700 Mary FAIRBANKS. Children of first marriage: Isaac died young;
Ephraim died young; Mary married Abijah BRUCE; and Elizabeth
married Josiah NEWTON. Children of second marriage: Isaac married
Margaret; Joseph married Thankful; Dinah; Bethia died young;
Charles; and Solomon.

John LEAVENS - b. Apr. 27, 1640, Roxbury, MA; d. Oct.
16, 1696, Woodstock, CT. Son of John LEAVENS
and Rachel WRIGHT. John was a carpenter at Roxbury on Feb.
25. 1670/1, when he sold land inherited from his father. Married
first Jun. 7, 1665, Roxbury, MA; and second Nov. 23, 1674, New
Haven, CT Elizabeth PRESTON (b. Sep. 29, 1655, New Haven, CT;
d. 1693, Killingly, CT), daughter of Edward. Elizabeth married
second Peter ASPINWALL, son of Peter ASPINWALL and Remember PALFREY.

married Dea. Eleazer BATEMAN.
