James and Joyce (Cornish) Olmsted
James OLMSTED - bap. Dec. 4, 1580, Great Leighs, Essex;
d. Sep. 18, 1640, Hartford, CT. Son of James
OLMSTED and Jane BRISTOW. His name appears on Hartford's Founders Monument. From
The Family History of Judge Ellsworth D. Belden..., by
Stanley R. and Elvera Belden, 1980: "When James left his
home at Fairsted, he left in its burying place his wife and four
of their seven children. James Olmsted, together with two sons,
Nicholas and Nehemiah, two nephews, Richard and John, and a niece,
Rebecca, came to New England in the ship 'Lyon,' under Capt. PIERCE,
arrive at Boaston on the Lord's Day 16 September 1632, after a
voyage of twelve weeks from Braintree, England. There were 123
passengers, of whom 50 were children. They soon settled at Mount
Wollaston, now Quincy, near Boston, but in the course of a year,
they removed to New Town, now known as Cambridge, Massachusetts.
James was made a freeman 6 November 1632 and was chosen by a popular
vote 3 November 1634 to be the Constable." He removed to
Hartford, CT in the summer of 1634. In 1986, a memorial
conisting of a maple tree and granite marker was placed in the
Center Church Cemetery (Ancient Burying Ground), Hartford, CT
in honor of James OLMSTED and his brother Richard OLMSTED. Married

Nicholas OLMSTED - bap. Feb. 15, 1612, Fairsted, Essex,
England; d. Aug. 31, 1684, Hartford, CT (will dated Aug. 20, 1683
and proved Nov. 25, 1684). Son of James OLMSTED
and Joyce CORNISH.
To Boston and Hartford with father. Served
in Pequot War. Surveyor of highways; 1646; townsman for North
side between 1653 and 1683; Corporal 1658; freeman 1669; deputy
to General Court 1672 and 1673. Served in King Philip's War and
made Capt. Aug. 26, 1675. Married second Mary, perhaps the widow
Mary LORD, but she was not the widow of Dr. Thomas LORD, who married
Gregory WOLTERTON as his third wife (see TAG 68:160-75). Nicholas married first on Sep. 28, 1640 at Hartford, Hartford Co., CT.
Sarah LOOMIS - b. 1617, Essex, England; d. 1667, Hartford, Hartford Co., CT. Daughter of Joseph LOOMIS and Mary WHITE.

Capt. Nathaniel and Margaret (Leachland)
Turner
Nathaniel TURNER - b. England; d. Jan. 1646, aboard
ship. Arrived in New England with the Winthrop fleet 1630 and
settled at Lynn, MA. He requested to be admitted as freeman on
Oct. 19, 1630 and was admitted Jul. 3, 1632. Constable 1632; representative
1634; deputy 1635. Having been a soldier in England, he became
an original member of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company
of Boston. Appointed Captain of the Saugus train band 1633, and
commanded it during the Pequot War 1636-1637. Moved to New Haven,
CT 1637 after his home at Lynn was destroyed by fire, where he
was an original signer of the New Haven Agreement and took the
oath of fidelity on Jul. 1, 1644. He became a member of the New
Haven First Congregational Church; assistant to the Governor 1639;
deputy in the Connecticut Assembly; and served on numerous committees
both in New Haven Colony and previously in Massachusetts Bay Colony.
On Sep. 1, 1640 Nathaniel was appointed Captain of all martial
affairs of the New Haven Colony. He was on the ill-fated "Lamberton's
Phantom Ship" which sailed from New Haven on a voyage to
Europe and was lost with all on board in Jan. 1646.
Margaret LEACHLAND - d. before Nov. 1662. As widow of
Capt. TURNER, she married Samuel VANGOODENHOUSEN about 1647. They
lived at New Haven, CT. (Some sources give Capt. TURNER's wife
name as Elizabeth, and some indicate her name is unknown.)

Thomas and Hannah (Mix) Olmsted
Thomas OLMSTED - b. Jun. 25, 1657, Hartford, Hartford Co.,
CT; d. 1741, West Hartford, Hartford Co., CT. His will was dated May
23, 1735 and his estate inventoried at £111-09-08 on May 28,
1741. Son of Nicholas OLMSTED
and Sarah LOOMIS. Owned covenant Aug. 14, 1692, and admitted to full communion Jul. 14, 1696. Families of Early Hartford,
by Lucius Barbour, indicates that Thomas married second Martha BIGELOW,
without citing a source. However, such a marriage is not included in The Bigelow Family Genealogy,
and there is no Martha BIGELOW included who could have been the second
wife of Thomas OLMSTED. The will of Thomas OLMSTED names his three sons
and five daughters, but makes no mention of a wife. Married Hannah MIX
on Jun. 25, 1691 at Hartford, Hartford Co., CT.
Hannah MIX - b. Jun. 30, 1666, New Haven CT; bap. there Aug.
12, 1666. No documented death date has been found for Hannah, but if
Thomas OLMSTED had a second wife, it is possible that some of the
younger children were of his second marriage. Daughter of Thomas
MIX and Rebecca TURNER.
