Parker Ancestry in England
The following lineage is from Burke's Landed Gentry,
followed by family notes written by Rowland Parker in 1673, and
found in an old book provided by Major John Parker of Browsholme,
the home of the Parker family in Lancashire. [Image,
history and description of Browsholme Hall].
Peter de Alcancotes (or Alkincoats), of Alkincoats,
nr. Colne, Lancs., had issue,
Adam de Alcancotes, living 1311, with land in Colne, Lancs,
had issue,
- William de Alcancotes, ancestor of the Parkers of Alincoats,
Foulridge and Ightenhill, Lancs.
- Richard le Parker, of whom presently.
The yr. son,
Richard le Parker, granted land in Colne by his father,
ante 1311, living 1346, had issue,
Edmund Parker, Parker of Radholme Park in the Forest of
Bolland, Yorks, granted an annuity 1400, had issue,
- Richard, of whom presently.
- John, Dep. Parker of Radholme 1390, granted an annuity 1413,
had, with other issue, an eldest son, John, who obtained a new
lease of Over-Browsholme 1440.
Richard Parker, Dep. Parker of Radholme 1390, leased
the Vacary of Browsholme from the Crown jointly with his brother
1400, granted an annuity 1413, had issue,
- Edmund, of whom presently.
- Robert, apptd. Parker of Radhome Park by patent, 1434, living
1482, had issue,
- Elizabeth, m. John Redmayne, of Neway in Bolland, yr. son
of -- Redmayne, of Thornton, Lancs, and had issue.
- Isabel, m. 1447, Robert Morcey, cousin and heir of Richard
Morcey, of Billington, Lancs.
- Margaret, m. 1449, Ranold Waddington, son of Robert Waddington.
The elder son, Edmund Parker, of Foulscales, living
1450, had issue, with five other sons and five daus.,
- Giles, of whom presently.
- Christopher, s. his uncle as Parker of Radholme Park.
The eldest son,
Giles Parker, of Horrocksford, Lancs, living 1479 and 1507,
tenant of Nether Browsholme 1482, had issue,
- Bryan, Bailiff of Bolland, m. Elizabeth, sister of Nicholas
Proctor, of Slaidburn, Yorks, and d.s.p. 1531.
- Edmund, of whom presently.
- Nicholas, of Horrocksford, living 1531, m. Anne, dau. of
Lancelot Marton, Lancs, and was ancestor of the Parkers of Horrocksford.
The 2nd son,
Edmund Parker, with whom Dugdale's visitation of the County
of York of 1665 begins, renewed the lease of Nether Browsholme
1507, built Browsholme Hall; m. Elizabeth [probably Jennett],
dau. and heir of John Redmayne, of Neway, by his wife Elizabeth,
eldest dau. and co-heir of Robert Parker, Parker of Radholme (see
above), and d. ante 1546, leaving issue, with thirteen other children,
- Giles, a chantry priest.
- Robert, of whom presently.
- John, of Foulscales.
The 2nd son,
Robert Parker, of Browsholme, Bowbearer of the Forest of
Bolland, Duchy of Lancaster, living 1591; m. 8 Jan. 1554, Elizabeth,
dau. of Edmund Chadderton, of Nuthurst, Lancs, and sister of William
Chadderton, Bishop of Chester (1579-95) and Lincoln (1595-1608),
and had issue [4 sons and 2 daughters],
- Edmund, drowned at Cambridge, unm.
- Thomas, of Browsholme, Bowbearer of the Forest of Bolland,
Duchy of Lancaster; m. Bridget (d. 1610), dau. and co-heir of
James Tempest, of Rayne, in Craven, Yorks, son of John Tempest,
4th son of Roger Tempest of Broughton, and d. 12 March, 1634,
having had issue.
- Roger (Very Rev.), D.D., Precentor and Dean of Lincoln; m.
Alice Pont, widow of Ralph Proby, of Brampton, Lincs, and d.s.p.
29 Aug. 1629, aged 71.
- William (Ven.), D.D., of Blisland and Warligan, Cornwall,
Archdeacon of Cornwall, living 1620; m. Joan Panchard, and was
ancestor in the female line, of John Anstis, Garter King of Arms
(1718-1744/5). [See below for son James.]
[Daughters of Robert and Elizabeth (CHADDERTON) PARKER:]
- Jennet, m. 1stly, Thomas Sherbourne, of Ribbleton, Lancs.
She m. 2ndly, Richard Holden, of Chaigley, Lancs.
- Elizabeth, m. Leonard Helme, of Goosnargh, Lancs. [From a
1953 letter by Col. Parker of Browsholme: Leonard Helme, son
of Thomas Helme, was aged 40 in 1600. Elizabeth and Leonard had
children Thomas married Isabel Grimscar, Robert (bur. 1671),
William, John (bur. 1658), James, Jane married Thomas Grimshar,
Bridgett married a Taylor, and Mary married Robert Tomlinson.]
[Rowland Parker, 20th child of James and Katteren (Bullar)
Parker, recorded the following on Sep. 1, 1673:]
Septemb'r ye 1st, 1673, Will Parker, Arch Deacon of
Cornwall & Justice of Peace of ye same County, was second
brother of Tho: Parker of Browsholme, Esq'r, who went from Browsh:
into Cornwell about ye yeare 1580, whoe he married it is not knowne,
but her Christen name was Joane, and was a mighty thrifty
provident woman, and ye said Will: had two sonnes, James
and Will:, and his house is called Traugoe in ye parish of Wartegin,
in Cornwall, about 16 miles of Launston, ye size towne of ye said
county:
James and Katteren (Bullar) Parker
James, his eldest sonne [descendant of Peter
de Alcancotes], was married [Dec. 31, 1616, St. Stephens by
Saltash, Cornwall, England] to
Katterren, eldest daughter of Sir
Richard Buller, of Shillingham, in ye said county, hear porcon
was £2500, ye s'd Buller beinge a man of £7000 p.
annum; Will ye younger brother, Parson of Stoacke in Cornwall,
ye parsonage beinge worth £300 p. an., and who was never
married.
James had by ye said Katterren Buller 21
children, viz:
- Katterren, ye eldest, died younge.
- Allice, ye 2d, married Mr. [George] Smith, a Lawyer of Linneowe
in S'nt Niot p'ish, had issue 2 daughters.
- Will: Parker, ye 3d child, was married to Major Syks daughter,
and had in porcon £2500, and had issue 15 children, viz:
Will., Robt., the rest are daughters, and is yet a child bearing
woman, ye said Will: doth live in Trefrite in St. Maybias parrish
in ye said county, being 7 miles from Treugoe, his father's home;
there hath been sutes betwixt his father and him which hath empared
the estate.
- Katterren, ye 4th child of ye above James, died about 7 yeares
of agae.
- Robt., ye 5th child, was a prentice in London, and died within
halfe a years yt he came from his prenteship.
- James, ye 6th child, Captain of a foote Company, died about
35 years of age.
- Cordelia, ye 7th child, was married to Mr. Father, parson
of Stoacks in Cornwall, and had issue 3 children.
- Anthony, ye 8 child, died young.
- Rich'd, ye 9th, Dr. of Phyzicke, went into Virginy,
married a Londoner & had issue 6 children. Liveth upon S'nt
James River in ye uplands of Virginy & hath been High Sherife
of ye s'd County. [This is Dr. Richard Parker of Charles River and Henrico Cos., VA. Contrary to some claims, he is not the same person as Richard Parker of Nancemond Co., VA.]
- Mary, ye 10th, married Mr. Lower, of Biefindte in ye parrish
of Wartegin in s'd County.
- Francis, ye 11th, was prentice in London to Mr. Threvenhir,
a Lininge Draper in Cheapside; served about four years aof his
time & then went into Portingall. Soe came back and is at
present a Corporal to Colonel Sulker in ye Duke of York's Regiment
of foote and is Clarke of ye said Company [added in a later hand];
afterwards slayne in ye Engagement betwixt ye Dutch and us, haveinge
both his legs shott of upon w'ch he imediately died.
- Jane, ye 12, a maid, and lives w'th her father at Traugoe.
- George, ye 13, prentice to a wollings draper at Hunginton
12 myles of Exeter; went from there into Virginy. [Married Miss
Perrott. Settled in MD.]
- Eliz., ye 14, died about 14 years of age.
- Jo., ye 15, Master of Arts of Oxf'd and Minister of Milo
in Cornwall; married ye widdow of Justice Trevenhir and had issue
by her one sone.
- Joan, ye 16, married Mr. Nicolls, Minister of Larrick in
Cornwall; had issue 2 daug.
- The 17, still borne.
- The 18 &
- 19, died unchristened.
- Rowland, ye 20th, is a Corporall in Prince Ruperd's Regiment
of Dragoones; Sir Jo. Talbot is Leiuetenant Colonell, Jame Walker
his Captin, now quartered at Hull, who gave this Information
at Browsholme, 1673, Sep. ye 1st.
- Katteren, ye 21st, married to one Mr. Bray, a Shopkeeper
in London at ye Signe of ye Cap in hande at ye back syde of S'nt
Clemans, and hath issue one daughter. Since removed to ye Maypole
in ye Strand.

names in bold type are those direct ancestors of the line of Dr.
Richard PARKER. The sequence of the 21 children of
James PARKER above are as provided by Rowland PARKER of Browsholme.
Given below are christening dates from another source, the first five
listed recorded at St. Stephens by Saltash, and the rest at Warleggon
<sic>. The number following the name corresponds to the
possible child in the listing provided by Rowland PARKER, with
number 17 unlisted. Dr. Richard PARKER is 9th in both sequences.
